The joypad which is a 5 way is similar to that found on the SPV M and is surrounded by 6 other keys. These were missing from the Wizard devices. Also included above the display are the usual Email and Internet buttons. Finally there is a button just below the screen which serves as the video call key. There is also a camera on the front of the device. This is a low resolution camera used for video calls. That said, the case design is squarer than the Wizard which makes the M feel smaller in the hand.
On the left side of the device, in another break from the norm, the volume slider has been replaced by a scroll wheel. Below these buttons is the MicroSD card slot. You wont find a 2. More on this later. The SIM card sits neatly under the battery as you would expect. The battery has a slightly higher capacity than the Wizard at mah, compared to the mah in the Wizard. Orange claim that the battery is good for 6 days on standby. In practice the combination of calls and data usage led to me having to charge it after about 2 days — about the same as the Wizard.
The screen on the M is the same as you would find on the M or Wizard type devices. The resolution is x The backlight seems a little brighter than the M but still suffers from a slight yellow cast. The reality? Each key is slightly domed and for easy. The keyboard also has a number of shortcuts which you can see in blue below. The new WiFi hardware in the M will handle both On the right side of the unit is the power button.
Well, with the power saving switching the. Hitting this button can be a little tricky at times. Of course, the trouble with this is that you could accidentally launch Internet Explorer, make a phone call or do something else. Though after two weeks, I almost prefer the latter option rather than having to find that recessed power button each time I want to. Also on the right of the unit is the camera button — you may also be able to see the stylus here too.
To be honest with the plethora of buttons and shortcuts on this device you can get away with doing the. The camera button above activates this rather prominent-looking camera. The design of the lens surround is much better than previous designs. Again if we. This gives rapid access to contacts and menu items.

As you can see from the above specs, the M features microSD. Gone is the full size SD found on the Prophet, gone is the miniSD found on the Wizard, and along comes yet another memory card format for you to invest in :D Available at time of writing in capacities of up to 2GB, microSD cards really are tiny, about the size of your fingernail, and as well as being physically smaller, they use less power than their predecessors.
Although the status of Orange's HSDPA network is somewhat unclear, the fact that you are ready to use it should they likely roll it out is a definite plus. The screen on the M has excellent brightness and minimal yellowing. When using an Orange m previously, I noticed poor screen brightness and viewing angle when compared to my JAMin.
No such problem on the M, it is excellent, with a very broad viewing angle. Top marks! The 2MP camera is of reasonable quality, with a flash and macro mode - see the sample photos later in this review! Let's start with the overall construction of the device. The device is styled primarily in black plastic, with a grey band around the side, grey buttons on the front, grey camera surround on the back, and a silver piece stretching from the top of the device down to the video call button on the front.
There's no debate, this is a great looking device. Along with the Dopod Pro which is virtually identical bar branding , it's the pick of the pack in the current Hermes handsets. The only differences between the two are cosmetic - you can identify a variant by seeing if it has an oval directional pad HERM or a square directional pad HERM Looking at the front from top to bottom, firstly you'll note the 2 hardware buttons for Messaging and Internet Explorer.
A nod to the wizard design, these are very useful quick access keys. Below these buttons sit the LEDs and the speaker. Yes, the LEDs are pretty huge and very bright. To the left is the Orange logo, to the right is the 'video cam' - i. Next comes the lovely 2. Very nice indeed. The M addresses one of my main criticisms of the Wizard device. Hardware keys that map to the soft keys on the device are also present, to try and make 1 handed device usage as effective as possible.
All in all, the front of the device looks very nice IMHO, although as mentioned previously, the buttons themselves are rather cramped compared to the HERM cousin e.
Chubby-fingered users beware however :P. The bottom of the device is home to the IR port, reset hole, microphone, battery removal latch and miniUSB port.
You'll notice the shape is slightly different. While it can use regular miniUSB connectors, it is also designed to accomodate the headset.
That's right, there is no longer a dedicated 2. Although adaptors will be available shortly, it is a shame : On the bottom of the device you will also find the lanyard loop and the stylus silo - which is rather stiff, at least when new probably a good thing as it's on the bottom. The stylus is identical to that on the Wizard, i.
I personally prefer full size styli? The right hand side of the device contains the camera button which becomes the top when using the camera , a dedicated button for 'Comm Manager' and the power button.
It's a true wheel, with a lovely positive rolling action - and it is clickable. Perfect for browsing through emails. The button next to it is an 'OK' button, again, perfectly suited to scrolling through emails. A very neat touch. The back of the device features an external antenna connector for car kits etc. The macro mode works very well, and the flash is reasonably effective see sample shots.
Above the camera is the branding '2. The fact there is no space between 2.
