Win 8 pro update, clean install. You are a genius and it is such nice from you to share this with us! Have a great holiday season! Saved me from installing a prior version of windows in order to circumvent this nonsense. Thank You. Without theses steps i would have struggled all day long. I was having issues with the media server and the only way my TV would be compatible is if i had done new install. Windows has given one more reason to piss me off and switch to Mac.
Then follow the instructions that will be provided on the screen to reinstall Windows on your PC. First, you will need to reinstall the qualifying license, then start the upgrade again to Windows 8. A workaround for this situation is to create a system image of Windows 8 just after you have upgraded.
So if your drive does crash, you can simply restore the image on a new hard disk or restore the image on the same drive if you just want to reinstall Windos 8. See the following for instructions about how to create a system image of your Windows 8 installation:. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. Marilyn, I read where, when upgrading, if you choose the "Do Nothing" option as opposed to importing files and setting or personal files, documents, etc.
If so, this would be much easier than some of the methods described here. Do you know if I upgrage and chose not to import anything from W7 to W8 - will I have the same nice clean system - even if I have to manually go back in and install programs and move documents and pictures back, etc? Reader uncommoner shows us a workaround for this issue. If you do a clean install using the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant, you should be fine—but if you've already formatted your drive or you're moving to a new drive, you can't do a "clean install" without installing an old version of Windows first.
It'll let you install Windows 8 cleanly, but when you go to activate, you get an error 0xB, saying your product key can only be used for upgrading. When you get back into Windows, you should be able to run the Activation utility and activate Windows as normal, without getting an error.
Obviously, you could use this trick for evil, but it has its legitimate place too—if, say, you're upgrading your hard drive and want to do a fresh install on it, or if you formatted your drive before upgrading.
We haven't had a chance to test it ourselves, but it's been well documented around the net , so we're confident it should work for you if you're getting this particular error.
